In the article the current state of quality supply of engineering surveys for construction is discussed. The main criteria for improving the design quality of buildings and structures for industrial, civil and other purposes is the reliability and adequacy of the results of engineering-geological surveys. The authors show the examples of inadequate study of engineering-geological conditions in the design of structures that led to emergency situations. Consideration of the reasons of accidents in structures showed that they are caused by lack of research conducted, the underestimation of the complexity of geological conditions. In the process of conducting geotechnical investigations the works were focused directly in the enclosure of a designed building, and the features of geological and hydrogeological conditions of the off-site were much more complex. In the process of construction during the sinking of the pit activation suffusion processes occurred, which led to an accident. Underestimation of the use of these geological funds in this example shows that even in the presence of fund materials, which are currently almost not increased, errors may occur due to the notorious savings for research. The requirements to ensuring the reliability and adequacy of engineering-geological surveys, which the authors call "The Rule of two D" (in Russian — Reliability and Adequacy), lie in the existing legal acts. The practice of fulfilling requirements to a large extend shows that the desire to save money at the stage of design and exploration works results in additional costs for additional design, recovery from accidents and works on a new project. The authors critically evaluated the development of engineering and geotechnical engineering instead of geological survey, which is not methodologically and theoretically substantiated and leads to the excluding from engineering surveys the consideration of the off-site geotechnical conditions directly below the designed structure. The authors give the recommendations for improving the examination quality of the results of surveys and recommendations on obligatory increase of geological funds.

The article focuses on such buildings as Moscow Central Post Office, State Museum of Fine Arts and GUM. All these buildings were constructed by famous Russian engineer Shukhov V.G. His 160th anniversary is celebrated in 2013.The skylight rectangular in the plan is a covering of General hall in Moscow Central Post Office. It has 3 tiers of glazing. The framework of this tier is a frame structure, which is based on the circumference on the cantilever trusses and, in addition, is hanging on the main trusses of the marquise. The bearing construction of the external lantern consists of ordinary, diagonal and bracing riveted trusses.The covering construction of State Museum of Fine Arts is a combined system, which consists of 2 types of metal trusses. The trusses located under the lamp are of polygonal shape and are bearing constructions for the attic floor, lower and middle glazing contours, as well as for lantern trusses. Lantern trusses of triangular shape serve for attachment of the external glazing contour and areas of metal roofing on the ridge, in the support zones and in the valley.Trading house of GUM has arch translucent covering. Bearing constructions of these coverings are roof arches of circular shape with cross shaped tie beams. Roof boarding was set on the booms made of rolled tees for glazing attachment. Lantern trusses have triangular shape and serve for attachment of an external contour glazing and plots metal roofing on the ridge, in the support zones and in the valley.The article presents the results of examinations, which have been performed by different organizations for the last 30 years.All these buildings are monuments of cultural heritage and they need constant supervision. The covering construction of Moscow Central Post Office needs repair and reconstruction.

The development of a new regulatory base in the field of ropeways construction in the Russian Federation is currently coming to an end. Federal legislation defines the following priorities: updating of Construction Norms and Regulations and state standard specifications, energy saving and energy efficiency, converging Russian and European Union standards (including standards for building design - Eurocodes). This work should be completed in 2014. Experience in designing and coordinating passenger ropeways projects may lead, after analyzing the current status of regulatory legal base, to the following suggestions: simplifying the order of ropeways registration and commissioning for the reduction in administrative resource; new regulatory base should include the links to appropriate Eurocodes (a list of which is provided in the article). Operating personnel and designers might also find useful clarifications on the application of Eurocodes and the links to the corresponding Russian normative documents, which regulate design, calculation and control of both the ropeway and its separate parts. Absence or under fulfillment of such rules (for example, as in the case of the method of calculating construction during various working/non-working ropeway modes) should lead to their further development, which may be carried out by a combined group of ropeway designers, ropeway technologists and other related specialists; expanding security rules for passenger, cargo and ski lift ropeways on other types of cable transport, such as APM-ATS systems, which may be used throughout the Russian Federation in the future.

The following conclusions were made upon completion of the testing of crane beams:
The lowest rigidity is demonstrated by welded beams exposed to temporary mobile loads; the maximal buckling caused by temporary mobile loads is equal to 12 mm, or 1/1,1790 of the span; the rigidity of crane beams of an overflow dam meets the requirements set by Section E2.1 of Construction Rules 20.13330.2011 "Loads and Actions".
In general, the authors state that the crane beams of the span structure of the overflow dam are in a serviceable operating condition, according to their opinion issued upon completion of examination and testing procedures. The recommendation is to regularly tighten screw nuts and to install high-strength bolts in the points of missing rivets. The authors also recommend applying a rust-proofing coating to all metal structures of the dam spans.
