The article presents the findings of the research performed within the framework of Analytical Agency-Level Target-Oriented Programme entitled Development of the Research Potential of Higher School in 2009-2011, Action 2. Project 2.1.2/9589 is entitled Development of Scientific Foundations and Technologies of Protection of Urban Territories from Natural and Anthropogenic Disasters and Negative Impacts. Nizhny Novgorod was selected as the object of research. Manifested dangerous geological processes underway in the city are analyzed in the long-term run. The article demonstrates that the worst hazard comes from the landslides that can destroy the life sustenance system of the city, including its water supply, central heating and other systems. Assessment of efficiency of existing landslide prevention measures is also provided. Dependence of landslide phenomena on the cycles of the solar activity is proven. The landslide development pattern for the coming years is simulated through the employment of the fractal analysis method.

Natural calamities cause destruction of highways and artificial structures that they accommodate, thus, inflicting a substantial damage onto the national economy. The authors describe various natural phenomena and geological processes typical for North Vietnam. The reasons for and the characteristics of each type of disasters are also provided in the article. The authors have generated a set of actions aimed at prevention or mitigation of damages, and they are enlisted in the article. The authors make their conclusions in respect of the future areas of research and the monitoring of interaction between the road surface, the transport infrastructure and the environment. Attainment of the aforementioned objective involves road surface monitoring to be accompanied by specific researches and compilation of maps of the areas exposed to frequent natural calamities. Timely notification of upcoming natural calamities and provision of effective recommendations are needed for the population to get prepared for the adverse events in advance. Besides, restriction of earth works in the areas exposed to natural disasters is necessary.Road building projects must incorporate environmental protection, organizational, technology and designelated actions aimed at the improvement of operating parameters of road beds of highways and at prevention of any further negative consequences in the course of operation of highways. Intensive wood planting and restriction of mining operations in specific areas are to be implemented.

Subject: the article describes the structure, technologies of construction, gardening and exploitation of the Holy Trinity Seraphimo-Diveevsky Monastery - the ancient linear fortification consisting of a ditch and an earth embankment that is located directly above the ditch. Research objectives: ensure the stability of slopes, create a technique for gardening of steep slopes in difficult microclimatic conditions, ensure drainage of water. Materials and methods: the computational techniques were used to ensure stability of slopes, and experimental techniques were applied for their phyto-fixation; geosynthetics, rebar grids, varietal herbs, gooseberries and thuja were used. Results: for recreation of the unique structure, a special set of design, survey and construction works was developed, as well as works to maintain the structure during its exploitation. In particular, we have developed the method of detection of the recreated ditch based on the stratification of bulk soils by their age; the methods for fastening the slopes; lawn grass mixture formula for slopes with angles of 45° and 65°; drainage system. Conclusions: owing to the research work, for the first time this construction was completed with the required parameters, while the earlier recreation attempts failed due to erosion and landslide processes. The developed methods can be applied for recreation of other ancient defensive fortifications on the fields of great battles and for landscaping the territories with complex relief.
