Professional criticism decides controversial issues within the specialty, its edge focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of the project, on the professional qualities of the authors and on accordance of the project concept with social tasks. Professional criticism fine-tunes urban development plans, stops the destruction of open spaces in the city, condemns imitation and ambition, identifies tolerant modes of coexistence of the old and new.It is noted that a number of discussion problems eventually worked themselves out. The author touches upon an issue of problem points of higher architectural education.Administrative criticism is aimed at solving the disputable issues by the establishment of the positions contingency, but not their mutual negation.

The emphasis of modern critics shifts from discussions on formal issues (stylistics, decorative components, imagery) to the content issues of environment organization, materialized by town-planning actions. The prospects of the destruction of the existing town structure by spontaneous infill construction are quite realistic, which requires not only critical discussion, but also strong opposition to antisocial forces. A city stopped to be a comfortable environment for a human.A number of estimations is put forward, which characterize negative trends in modern city architecture. They represent the object of technical analysis and positive recommendations, which should be regarded a creative mechanism of influence on the practice through the theory.The intensity of social and economic transformations as givenness of modern reality radically changes the mentality, esthetic and space perception of the living environment, opinions on the value interrelation of new and old in building. All these requires heightened positive reasoning and constructive, maybe even tough actions.The danger of losing the face of Russian architecture is also essential. The reason for this is in epidemic copying by native architects, who are fascinated by foreign masterpieces eccentricity.

The paper considers civil engineering in retrospect. The paper presents the records of the two contracts that date back to 1837 and 1838. The contracts cover the two stages of construction of a famous church in Vozdvizhenskoe Village in the Moscow Province. These documents were stored in the Central Historic Archive, namely, in the collection of the town hall of Sergievskij Possad. These records of the two agreements in the collection of the brokers notes (or in other books of the same type) are of particular value, as the majority of authentic contracts have been lost. One of the contracts covers the organizational procedure and pre-construction works, while the other one covers the construction of the church. The first document gives the idea of environmental protection, employment of ecological technologies, and safe disposal and recycling of human biowaste in the course of dismantling of an old structure in Vozdvizhenskoe village. The second document that dates back to 1838 covers the sequence of construction works, starting from the foundation and ending with the arches, the types of building materials used, and peculiarities of stone masonry. The information recorded in the contract includes the names of the counterparties, day-to-day mode of life of seasonal workers, remuneration of labour and procedures that assure the quality of construction. This agreement makes it possible to outline the construction process that includes workers, bricklayers, the foreman, the contractor, the architect, and the customer. On the whole, both documents help us outline and assess some of the building practices of the 19th century. This issue is relevant nowadays, as our society has entered the phase of the market economy, while the experience accumulated by the past generations is of undeniable value.

Upon the completion of the analysis of thermal physic processes undergoing within the inter-building space and upon the identification of the mechanism of the convective motion undergoing in close proximity to the surfaces of buildings, substantial impact of solar radiation on thermal and wind conditions within inter-building spaces is identified. The impact intensity is driven by the exposure of surfaces to the sun and the intensity of heat transformation processes. Intensive influence of solar radiation produced on surfaces of buildings promotes convective streams that shape up the thermal and wind conditions within inter-building spaces.

The authors consider the problems related to available environment formation in the strategy of touristic cities development. One of the means of social and psychological rehabilitation of the disabled is tourism. It should be noted, that touristic cities mostly represent a complicated space structure with a lot of streets and concourses, with touristic objects distributed all over the city. Visiting and transportation in such an environment may cause difficulties. The aim is to form a touristic universal environment. A universal environment is aimed at widening the frames of a design target group and supposes an organization of comfortable city visit, availability of services, simple and recognizable navigation system for all the social groups. The suggested principles may become a guidance not only to the designers. The given material may also be useful for specialists in territorial marketing and touristic management and help to raise a regional economic efficiency.

Historical architectural buildings carry features of different culture layers, it exhibits specific character of places and urban matrix, play leading role in cultural succession of different epochs. Investigation, use and the existence itself of historical objects in the modern city architecture is a factor of national identity formation. Lack of due attention to the problem of historical buildings preservation will have a negative impact on the material and spiritual spheres of human life. That’s why preservation of historical architectural environment of the city is one of the most important tasks of the contemporary society. The authors analyzed technical, law and urban planning aspects of historical buildings’ functioning in the conditions of developing construction in the central city areas and constant increase of structural, economical, hygienic requirements to buildings. The technical state and possibilities of adjusting the buildings-monuments, which have preservation category, and buildings without such status are compared, as well as their role in cohesive architectural environment formation.

Actions aimed at the generality of elementary education in the course of the period days of the industrialization and cultural revolution in the USSR is under discussion in the proposed paper. On the basis of the archived documents, organization of construction of school buildings in Moscow in the 20ies and 30ies of the 20th century is analyzed.
It is noteworthy that industrialization in the periods of the first, second and third five-year plans reshaped the country and Moscow as its capital. Former suburbs turned into large industrial areas that had giant factories and housing built around them to accommodate workers. Thus, the population of Moscow grew in numbers.
The need for competent staff facilitated construction of new schools. Peculiarities of school construction in Moscow within the first five-year plan are considered in article on the basis of a school building in Likhobory in 1932. The school building design, work progress, assembly and interior, deadlines and problems of construction are specified. It is noteworthy that, despite any difficulties, 19 new school buildings were completed in Moscow in the years of the first five-year plan. Classes were organized according to the principle of two shifts to implement the general education programme in 1932.

Analysis of organizational and methodical issues associated with architectural competitions of the 1920-1930ss and evaluation of their results are provided in the article. The role of the architectural development and historical, cultural, social and ideological backgrounds of the architectural competitions are also covered by the author. The review of architectural competitions makes it possible to identify their impact produced on the development of the theory and practice of architecture. The period between 1920 and 1930 was marked by a quantitative and qualitative boom of architectural design competitions. Analysis of the practice of architectural competitions makes it possible to identify periods of revolutionary transformations. The most prominent buildings that date back to these periods include theatre buildings in Kharkov, Rostov-Don, Sverdlovsk; a competition for the architectural design of the Gosprom Building in Kharkov; a competition for the architectural design of the Palace of Soviets in Moscow, etc. These competitions have shaped up new approaches to volume and space-related solutions as well as architectural forms.
Research of the integral process of development of approaches and/or methods of organization of architectural design competitions make it possible to identify their role as effective catalysts of architectural theory and practice.

considered in the article. The author analyzes the influence of the 1812 Patriotic War on the political and cultural life of Russia, as there had been a rise of national consciousness in Russia in the first decades of the 19th century related to the victory over Napoleon. The author drives particular attention to the historic fact that Moscow suffered a lot more than other Russian cities in the War of 1812; the city was completely destroyed by the fire. The author provides statistical data related to the city as of the autumn of 1812. Moscow reconstruction plan proposed by Mr. Gestle, architect, and the procedure of "Commissioning of Structures", drafted under the guidance of O.I. Bove, architect, are analyzed in detail. The author also covers the personal contribution made by O.I. Bove, his associates D.I. Zhilyardi and A.G. Grigor'ev, into the reconstruction of the city centre.
The article features the town-planning policy of 1820-1830 and patterns of late classicism in the Moscow architecture.
The article is dedicated to the year of the Russian history and one of its major events, the anniversary of the victory in the Patriotic War of 1812.

The article covers a relevant historical and cultural problem of elaboration and maintenance of monuments of the military glory of 1812. The author considers various architectural and sculptural monuments illustrating heroic events of Patriotic war of 1812, built in the two Russian capitals - Moscow and Saint Petersburg in different historical periods, and also in primordial Russian towns, such as Smolensk, Vyazma, and Maloyaroslavets. Architectural and composition-related features of this or that monument erected against the background of historic events of the war of 1812 are analyzed in detail. The author demonstrates the links between architecture and sculpture within the framework of town-planning solutions implemented in the pieces that have found their places in the towns enlisted above.
The value of symbols of the Victory and Glory of the Russian army and the Russian people is marked. The names of the most famous heroes of this war, starting from a field marshal and ending with a soldier are inscribed.
By addressing the historical and cultural heritage of Russia, the author informs readers about the most significant events of the war. The author mentions an acute problem of the modernity, that is, preservation and restoration of monuments, and shares his view point.
The value of the historic and cultural heritage of Russia for military and patriotic education is emphasized. The article is prepared within the framework of the year of the Russian history.

The authors consider the problem of design of external stationary sun protection devices, namely, modified multi-component units that are especially effective in the hot and sunny climate of Lebanon.
Apart from their sun protection properties, the proposed units demonstrate effective light-reflecting characteristics in the clear sky environment. These properties substantially increase the value of the daylight factor. The value is mainly increased inside buildings, or in the areas that are located far from sources of natural illumination. The authors propose EF, a new efficiency factor to be taken into account in any calculations of the daylight factor. This factor depends on the shape of the sun protection device installed above the window of the storey below the one under consideration and at a distance from the device under consideration and the window in question. As a result, the new proposals increase the quality of the internal environment and may result in energy saving due to the reduction of the artificial lighting period.

The problem of high-quality illumination of the premises of multistory industrial buildings in the climatic conditions of southeast China is considered in the article, and a new effective system of natural illumination is implemented. The proposed illumination system is based on the existing sources of lateral illumination with addition of supplementary natural illumination incoming through the so-called «illumination wells».
Whenever industrial facilities are designed in the hot and sunny climate of southern provinces of China, particular attention should be driven to the high-quality internal microclimate, which is, to a substantial extent, based on the temperature, light and solar exposure rates inside buildings.
In the case under consideration, the solar exposure and protection of the premises from excessive sunlight are addressed as a top priority in terms of excessive heat input, thereafter, the above phenomena are considered in terms of their impact on the internal light environment generated by uncomfortable contrasts, brightness and glare.
Basically, the quality of the illumination environment depends on the natural illumination inside the buildings in question, which, in its turn, depends on the system of transmission of natural lighting and luminosity of its individual elements.

A significant portion of the overall heat loss is due to the heat loss through the building envelope. According to the opinions of experts, the surface area of exterior walls has the insulation of about 65 % of the total envelope of apartment buildings; therefore, thermal protection of external walls of buildings is a key issue in ensuring the thermal performance of envelopes of apartment buildings.
The author has developed design solutions that assure the thermal protection of exterior walls and that are aimed at identifying the optimal solution in terms of the location of insulation materials, their thermal performance and insulation of exterior walls of apartment buildings in central regions of China.
The author presents a comparative analysis of the main methodologies of thermal insulation designated for the exterior walls of multi-storey residential buildings: internal and external insulation, as well as the insulation in-between the wall layers. The analyses of wall designs are based on the insulation performance, thermal insulation performance, methods of mounting different systems of insulation, and cost of work.
As a result, practical recommendations originate from the statement that the most optimal designs of exterior walls of monolithic high-rise apartment buildings of central regions of China are those that have insulation on the outside of the building. They include layers of insulation made of extruded polystyrene, which is currently planned for use in the construction of high-rise monolithic residential buildings in central China.

The totality of all environmental influences, including domestic and industrial noise, must be taken into account in the design of building structures. Building envelopes that have appropriate acoustic protection properties are to be used in the practice of the acoustic protection (soundproofing, etc.). According to the principles of structural design, design of soundproof buildings can be broken down into the two groups: design with account for the security conditions (eg., windows, doors, walls, floors), and design of noise-proof structures (eg., partitions, suspended ceilings).<br />
<br />
Multi-optional design of building structures or buildings that meet the terms of acoustic protection requires a modern approach to the process of their development. Any progress in this area is associated with computer-aided design supported by multiple analysis options. Automation allows adjustments in order to comply with the variety of the input data or objective functions to provide for optimal cycling options. In this regard, the authors describe the algorithms and principles of design of building envelopes on the condition of and subject to the acoustic protection. The proposed solution represents a software package capable of performing a multivariate analysis of options of acoustic protection at each stage of building design. Practical application of the software package used to solve practical problems in the design of building envelopes has demonstrated its higher efficiency that the one of traditional design methods.<br />

The article covers the problem of development of the communication space of present-day metropolises. The significance of the issue is based on the fact that modern globalization has established new specific forms of urban lands, such as agglomeration and megalopolis. They accumulate extensive human resources and modify traditional forms of sociality. The author uses the philosophical methodology and communicative tools based on the latest publications on the problems of urban planning and architecture.
The author states that new technologies shaping the information society change the very structure of communication. The structure of an act of communication composed of information, communication, and understanding, is implemented on different levels of the urban semantic structure. If the information level is available to almost everybody, the culture of communication (understanding) appears as an elite skill that is complicated to master. Therefore, it's a great problem, as understanding is the basis of sociality.
A well-known Russian researcher V. Glazychev proposed an efficient methodological approach to the research into the transformation of the city in the history of the human civilization. He believes that the periodic breakdown of urban functions and the forms of cities was a very important
nodal point in the process of urban growth. A classical form of a traditional city remains as one of the most important aesthetic values, although now it's a vanishing trend. Centrifugal tendencies are strengthened in the process of urbanization. A metropolis, reflecting the diversity of its functions, becomes a dynamic "space of stream" (M. Castels) with a polycentric structure, imbued with functional links. A city becomes a machine that is constantly reproducing new massages. This continuity is perceived as a form that can only characterize the modern city as a whole. Informative saturation of the social environment leads to confusion of the genuine and non-genuine.
The conception of Cristian De Portzamparc, a French architect, is considered as an example of an active research into the formation of the communicative space of a metropolis. A metropolis is presented as a complex self-developing system full of various social networks where physical space is no longer an alienating barrier.

Simplicity of formation of the monolithic reinforced concrete and benefits of its use in the restrained conditions of the terrain make its application lucrative. Retaining walls and stairs are the most widely spread monolithic concrete elements used in the landscaping of private allotment gardens on the terrain.
In the article, the authors propose their design solutions for reinforced concrete elements integrated into the landscaping of allotment gardens on the terrain: a sheet-pile retaining wall with stairs and a monolithic reinforced concrete arch bridge.
The authors provide their sample analysis of a monolithic sheet-pile retaining wall with a stairs. Its steps and stair-head were analyzed as flexural elements tightly coupled with the retaining wall, with a platform on three sides and steps on two sides. There are formwork drawings and reinforcement drawings of a monolithic sheet-pile retaining wall with a stairs in the article.
Analysis of a monolithic reinforced concrete arch bridge was performed using LIRA software. To reduce the temperature and shrinkage stresses in an arch bridge, as well as stresses that arise in it in case of installation of supports, a two-hinged arch was chosen as the design bridge model.
There are dimensions of the formwork, pattern of the steel frame of the reinforced concrete arch bridge and the design solution of a swivel support unit in the article.

The author considers the process of development of the architect's personality depicted in Vitruvy's and as a based on the work of L.B. Alberti where his role is the one of the founder of the imaginary world generated in the XVIIth century.
The image of an architect is not static, it is transformable. Each time changes in the architectural mode of thinking, as well as in science, technology and arts, are reflected in his "faces".
The paper represents a comparative analysis of antique, medieval, renaissance architectural consciousness of the XVIIth century. The idea of a universally educated personality (uomo universale), generated by Vitruvy, loses its importance in the Middle Ages.
According to Alberti, the true goal of an architect was reduced to consideration of a plan and to its implementation in detailed drawings. That was already enough to speak about the project as a work of architectural art. In that case implementation of a project in reality became the business of workers rather than architects.
Ideas of Alberti will find their reflection in the almost unknown novel and treatise that dates back to the end of the XVth century. It is entitled "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili'. Its authorship is attributed to Francesco Colonna, a Venetian monk. The model of «the paper architecture» which deals with ideas, rather than their material implementation will be more explicit here. (In spite of the fact, that the concept of the «paper architecture» is related to the name of G. B. Piranesi, architect of the XVIIIth century, the sources of this phenomenon are found in the Age of the Renaissance). Colonna actually cited Alberti, telling him to deal with the plan in his soul, "to always keep its completeness and wholeness", and not to fall to the level of simple builders and make building decorations. However the author of "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili", in his turn, overcomes the architectural tradition of Early Renaissance (brought up by Virtuvy and Alberti), and becomes the author of the next centuries. He develops his allegorical imaginary world filled with ideal samples and the fantasy of an architect, and not with projects or theories. Architectural descriptions of "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" represent an utopia, developed by such authors of the XVII century as T. Campanella and G. Marino.

The article discusses some problems of combination of old and new elements of urban space development, positive interaction of which significantly contributes to the unity and originality of architectural and artistic image of a city. The сonstantly evolving complex structure of the city exists not only in space but also in time. With the time the spatial structure of the city changes, as well as the ideas about aesthetic values and the problems of combination of nonsimultaneous formation elements arise. In the article the problems are considered from several points of view: interaction of the old and the new, formation of the historical monuments, their estimation, protection and integration to the new system. Research and analysis of some integration problems of old and new in the development of urban space lead to the following main conclusions. In a complex system of a city the coexistence process of structures is important, created in different times - the integration of old and new, which forms the unity of the urban environment. Integration of old and new, where the old acquires new qualities and the new is in harmony with the old, forms the historical layers, which give the ability to perceive the city in time. The time factor, saturating these layers, gives the city a personality and creates a link between the past, the present and the future via physical structures. In the integration of old and new artistic image formation based on contrasting expressiveness is essential, which is also advisable in case of ensuring the compositional and artistic communication between new buildings and historic zones. In the structure of the city not only unique monuments are valuable, but also their later additions and ordinary building complexes, which are the elements that form the environment and conditions of its perception, express the characteristic features of a certain period and complement the multi-layered artistic image. The combination of old and new is more effective coexisting in the interconnected system of urban processes of layers, created in different times, where a rethought historic building changes the relationship with the environment, gets a new meaning, becomes viable, expands the artistic potential of the new ensemble and associates with the area and its history. Process of the protection of historical environment and facilities in the city should always be considered in a unified approach with the tasks of reconstruction and the formation of new complexes. Protection and reconstruction process should include a wide range of approaches. Task of protecting an individual object, its parts or the building complex, individually defined for each case, contributes to the saturation of the image, where the introduction of the elements of different periods illuminates the process of changes within long time period. In the case of the introduction of the new in the old, modern architectural form should be converted into a part of the formed structure, must not violate the general while showing individuality, but saturate its historical diversity and preserve the opportunity for further development, the formation of flexible composition systems capable to transformation, is an ongoing task in present.

The article examines social and philosophical problems of spatial planning and urban development from the 1920's until the present. From the historical point of view there are three phases: the 1920s, 1930-1980s, 1990-2010s. In the 1920s two approaches were used in the development of the country: technical and economic and personalistics. The first meant not only the development of power engineering but also of the economy in the whole country. The second lies in stimulation of active creative work, disclosure of worker’s personal potential. On the one hand, it was turned to economic and technical modernization on the basis of the State Plan of the Electrification of Russia; on the other, it was relied on "diligent farmer". In the 1930-1980s the technical and economic approach was dominating. In the 1990-2010s the market approach was widely extended. According to the latter, the development of the national economy should be executed depending on the law of demand and supply. In Russia the realization of the market economy based on demand and supply was reduced to development of exclusively highly profitable business. In the article the author uses the methods of historical knowledge, analysis and comparison and provides suggestions on solving problems of spatial planning and urban development. Special emphasis is placed on the Soviet experience of the 1920s, when the market relations have not been completely destroyed.

Wooden folk architecture is a unique layer of world cultural heritage. Over a period of one and a half centuries of research of wooden architecture heritage in Russia different forms of monuments preservation were worked out. The most effective of them is creation of wooden architecture museums out in the open. The article considers the activities of the Kostroma Museum of wooden architecture for preservation of landmarks under the Federal target program «Culture of Russia». The Museum was created in order to preserve the irrecoverable loss of monuments of wooden architecture of the Kostroma region. The objects of wooden architecture require regular attention of restorers with the purpose of maintenance of monuments in the standard condition, timely restoration and conservation activities. The support of the Federal target program «Culture of Russia» has provided a series of repair-restoration, project and research works. The museumification of monuments as a large regional network, when creating sufficient transport and tourist infrastructure, would enrich the tourist and cultural map of the Kostroma region. The author sets out the prerequisites for creating the Program for the preservation of monuments of wooden architecture, examples of similar programs in force in other regions of the Russian Federation.
